What about Map Listings?
Your map listings are the backbone of your mobile traffic from visitors. We build mobile map links into our themes and websites which allows users to tap the address and open the directions from within their map client.
The ideal response after the click should be a link to your business page on either the Apple Maps format, or Google Maps. The user should see a photo of your business, correct phone number information, and possibly reviews.
The two formats use different methods of producing these results. I will breakdown the two as best as possible:
Apple uses Yelp and Tom Tom data to create their business listings. While Yelp is the primary the company has strong relationships with Yahoo and Bing and may utilize their map listings as well.
Why is Apple Maps important?
Apple is a competitor of Google’s and is looking to drive traffic away from Google whenever possible. Because of the failure of the initial Apple Maps launch Apple will only direct traffic away from Google if it is deemed more essential or an improvement.
About iOS Devices
When a user searches for a restaurant on Apple’s iOS search or on the internet using Safari they will be greeted with a map citation first, with Internet Search results underneath. The immediate effect is the same as online ranking, the user is likely to click the first listing. The first listing whenever useful for a service, food, or local category is going to be a map listing.
Because Google has the dominant hand in maps many businesses have not setup maps with Yahoo, Bing, Yelp, or other listings. Having listings with this group will increase the likelihood that your visitors will find your business when searching on an Apple device.
Strikingly Apple has built this search into the phone address book. If the user dials the phone number from the office map listing all of the contact info will be saved in their phone. This allows the user to have a copy of the website, any associated iOS apps, physical address, and of course the phone number with an image profile.
Mac OS X Yosemite
Apple is not stopping at the iPhone. Yosemite has a built in search engine referred to as Spotlight that searched your desktop for files, contacts, map locations, and online search.
And Google Maps?
Just like Apple’s Platform Google produces Android for mobile phones. By default Google Maps listings will be on Android devices so it is optimal to have a professional presence on the Google Maps Platform.
Additionally Google Maps is the most used Map Platform and by default is going to be a primary destination for developing a map data listing.
What is Local SEO and Directory Submissions?
Shortest answer possible, Local SEO is the method of obtaining a higher ranking for a map listing. That means you want to optimize to increase the rank of your map listing when people search for your service category, and at minimum when they search for your office. Because there are map applications and internet search results, and now operating system results, it can get confusing. Optimizing however does not change and following approved policies will apply to all.
Directory submissions are the listings you submit for a business location. Part of local SEO when considering a traditional search engine like Google or Bing, not a Map Application, is that need to be visible for your location. The criteria is broken up as follows:
–Number of Listings
–Authenticity of Listings
Number of Listings means that the more listings you have on the internet the easier it will be for a record collecting Search Engine to identify that your website and address does a particular service.
Authenticity of Listings is the most important to a search engine. A person that runs a search engine company does not want their users to receive the wrong information and is making sure they don’t post the wrong data like Apple did when they launched Apple Maps and had broken images, or directions that lead into the ocean.
Authenticity is important for businesses because the map owner will try to clean out bad listings and in some cases remove all related accounts. Many businesses neglect to maintain pages and they are not the target for a ban. However they do not receive the benefit of a proper listing. To create a proper listing often requires a cleanup.
This is basically the review of your existing directory data and cleanup of the following:
–Multiple Business Names
–Multiple Phone Numbers
–Matches Website Contact Info
There are also technical specifications that we setup for clients to let search engines know the website is the authority for the location. Linking the map listing, creating a directory sitemap and submitting it or combining the sitemap. There is also another method that is open-source called Schema which we also utilize for map listings.
